INFORMATION  ABOUT OUR  EPAL'S SCHOOL - GERMANY

Erich Kastner Realschule Hermeskeil
BY Christian Reiter

( Secondary School )

As soon as you get out of the school bus or when you walk to the main entrance , you see a sign with the label ,,Erich Kastner Realschule Hermeskeil”. This is the name of our school. Our school was founded in 1972.

Today there are about 46 teachers and 950 students at the age of 11 to 16. Most of them are from the surrounding of Hermeskeil, from villages in theregions Trier-Saarburg, Bernkastel-Wittlich, Birkenfeld, St. Wendel und Merzig-Wadern.

On the way to my classroom I first go to the entrance hall.

At certain times it is decorated very nicely, e.g. at Christmas, Easter, before our summer holidays.

There also exhibitions of results the students worked out in different subjects. for example in English: London sights

When you walk straight on you can see the school office and the offices of our school management.

This is our headmaster Mister Gärtner

And these are our head deputies.

At the entrance hall, there are halls to the right and left side and stairs to the first floor and basement. Each hall in our school has its own name,

ike Rue de Paris or Magellan. The names have a relation to our school subjects. Students´ results in these subjects are presented on the walls. Look at the picture with the blue sign. At our school students are taught many subjects

Extracurricular activities at our school:

After the school lessons there are a lot of activities for students. The most interesting activity for grade 10 students are the dancing lessons. There are more than 100 participants and in May they can participate in our annual school-ball.

There also some other clubs for younger kids, for example schoolband, school newspaper, soccer for boys and girls, fitness, volleyball, school orchestra, choir, eTwinning, Comenius

Activities during the breaks:

Another interesting club is the school radio RADIO WOODSTOCK. The members of this club entertain the other students during the breaks with modern music and make announcement to important events. You can go to the school library, where everybody can borrow an interesting book. When you are hungry, you can buy something to eat and to drink at a little kiosk on the school yard.

Participation in educational programs

Our school takes part in many competitions. So we have already got a lot of awards in language competitions and in technical competitions. Every year there is an `Egg race` at our school. Younger students construct vehicles and there are prizes for the students whose vehicles run fastest or farthest of all. Our school has a school partnership with a French school and Comenius partners from Malta, Spain and Sweden. Our school is involved in the education of young teachers and in the education of students from other schools in ICT (ECDL). We take part in the program. Learning how to live in a healthy way`. In grade 5-7 students take part in the program `Becoming adults`. Students learn to understand behavioral problems during puberty, how to treat their classmates and teachers in a respective way and how to become self-confident and responsible.
